Our Commitment to Sustainability

We lead the industry through our dedication to quality and craftsmanship, while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

Sustainability has been our priority from the beginning...

Since 2013, Schilling Cider has uplifted the craft of cider-making into the mainstream, allowing an ever-growing number of people to enjoy cider. While we continue to innovate and make authentic, delicious ciders, we also embrace the responsibility that comes along with being an industry leader.

From a canning line that recycles heat to the tune of 80-85% energy savings, to our 100% printed cans, to an all-electric-vehicle sales fleet, we have strived to integrate environmental-consciousness into all facets of our organization as we scale. For the CO2 emissions that we are still working towards eliminating associated with Excelsior Imperial Apple, we invest in verifiable carbon-offset credits which result in permanent climate impact and sustainable economic benefit.

Climate change has widespread effects that impact our entire world, from the very water and apples that make up our favorite beverages to our friends and neighbors that we share the Earth with. We will continue to systematically reduce our emissions per can in an effort to prioritize the health and wellness of all people and our planet.

CLIMATE NEUTRAL

Our #1 sku, Excelsior Imperial Apple 12oz is Climate neutral

Although Schilling is constantly striving to reduce emissions, every step in the process of creating cider requires energy. As we continue to find ways to reduce the energy we consume, we are also investing in projects that will offset the remaining emissions. We partner with accredited organizations that help us invest in projects which eliminate the release of climate changing gases permanently, ensuring alignment with our values and impact in our community. To help us find and invest in high quality and high impact projects, we have partnered with Tradewater, a mission-based B-corp that develops and implements high-value projects which permanently prevent some of the most potent greenhouse gases from releasing into the atmosphere. CARBON DISCLOSURE

Annual voluntary carbon assessment

Schilling Hard Cider is committed to conducting annual voluntary carbon assessments to measure CO2 emissions from orchard to retail, with the first assessment completed in 2021. Early results indicate that our ciders emit as little as half the carbon emissions of other top nationally distributed beer brands. Carbon Credits Download

Packaging

100% is either recyclable or reusable.

In 2013, Schilling became the first West Coast Cidery to package only in cans and kegs, aiming to lower our carbon footprint. This move has influenced the craft cider industry by increasing the adoption of cans over the last decade (Maltz, 2022). We also only decorate cans by printing directly on the cans, as opposed to wraps or stickers which are only recyclable when removed by hand. All our packaging is 100% recyclable or reusable, from the cartons and cans to the shrink wrap and pallets.

100% EV FLEET

We are the Only Alcohol Company With a 100% EV Sales Fleet.

In 2023 Schilling Cider acquired eight GM Bolt electric vehicles for their Pacific Northwest sales team. In 2024, Schilling grew its electric sales fleet with the purchase of 10 Tesla Model 3’s, making them the first alcohol company in the industry to adopt a 100% EV-powered sales fleet. This transition has prevented the burning of an estimated 6,521.88 gallons of fuel through August 2024, equivalent to roughly 58 MT CO2, which we hope encourages others in the industry to follow suit.

The Keep It Wild marketing campaign

We give 5% back to non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving wild spaces.

Starting in 2022 as an effort to honor Earth Day, Schilling has conducted an annual campaign which gives back 5% from our best-selling SKUs to organizations dedicated to preserving wild spaces. Raising over $100,000 since the first campaign, Schilling has partnered with groups like Washington Wild, Oregon Wild, Colorado Resource Advocates and other non-profits who are dedicated to preserving wild spaces. To encourage participation from stakeholders across the industry, Schilling’s distributor partners like Columbia Distributing Hayden Beverage, Republic National Distributing Company, High Country Beverage and others have helped us restore and maintain wild spaces.
